ZUMBA LEUVEN

If you've typed "Zumba Leuven" into Google, you're probably looking for something specific: a fun group class where you can dance, move, and not think about work for an hour. Good news — Leuven has several options. Some of them are actual Zumba. Some of them aren't, but they scratch the same itch.

I run one of those not-Zumba options (more on that in a minute), so I've done my homework on what else is out there. Here's what I've found — no spin, just the facts.

Where to do actual Zumba in Leuven

KU Leuven Sport runs Zumba sessions at the university sports campus on Tervuursevest. It's a full-body workout to Latin and international music — merengue, reggaeton, that sort of thing. The sessions run during the academic year (roughly September to May), and you'll need a KU Leuven sports card. It's affordable, well-run, and popular with students and staff. Worth knowing: there's no Zumba during exam periods or university holidays.

Life Style Fitness on Mechelsestraat offers Zumba as part of their group class schedule. It's a traditional gym setup — you'll need a membership, and you get access to their pool, sauna, and other classes alongside it.

JIMS Fitness has two locations in Leuven (Slachthuislaan and Bondgenotenlaan). Both offer group classes including dance-based options as part of a gym membership. The Slachthuislaan branch has the broader group class offering.

Sportoase — if you're already a member at one of their centres, they include Zumba in the group class timetable. Latin and world music, high energy, open to all levels.

Blits78 in Kessel-Lo runs a Zumba class on Monday evenings at 19:00. This one's a local dance group rather than a gym chain, which gives it a different feel.

Not Zumba, but similar energy

Body Expressive has a studio in Leuven offering Partyrobics — a dance fitness format that's closer to a night out than a workout. The music leans commercial and pop, the vibe is expressive and social, and they also do chair dance, heels classes, and workshops. If you're looking for something creative alongside the fitness, it's worth checking out.

Sporty.be (run by the city of Leuven) offers "fit dance" for over-50s — a gentler option if high-intensity isn't your thing. These are seasonal, with registration through the city's sports programme.

And then there's Groove Fitness (that's me)

I should be upfront: I don't teach Zumba. I teach disco and soul dance fitness — original 70s and 80s tracks by artists like Chic, Earth Wind & Fire, and Chaka Khan. No remixes, no reggaeton, no current chart music. It's a completely different musical world.

If the reason you're searching for Zumba is "I want to dance in a group and have fun," then yes, we do that. If the reason is "I specifically love Latin music and want a high-intensity cardio session," then one of the actual Zumba options above is a better fit.

What makes Groove different: the music is the point, not the background. The sequences are guidelines — nobody's watching whether you get every step right. Most of the people in class are 40+, and the energy is more "Sunday morning with Earth Wind & Fire" than "Saturday night in Ibiza." Low-impact, high-joy. "First class is free" if you want to try it.

Three locations: Sunday mornings in Kessel-Lo, Monday evenings at Romaanse Poort, Friday lunchtimes at SportOase Heverlee.

How to choose

Honestly, just try one. Most options in Leuven offer a trial class or a low-commitment way to test it out. The best dance fitness class for you is the one you actually enjoy going to — and you won't know that from a website. (I wrote a longer piece on if you want to dig into that.)

If you love Latin beats and high energy: Zumba. If you love disco and soul and a relaxed vibe try Groove Fitness. If you want creative expression and variety: Body Expressive. If you want something gentle and community-based: Sporty.be's fit dance.

Whatever you pick — you'll be moving, smiling, and forgetting about your inbox for an hour. That's the whole point.
